Sentinel-2 Spectral Indices

Vegetation, water, built-up and alteration minerals from real imagery.

Finds Sentinel-2 Level-2A scenes over your area, renders spectral indices such as NDVI, NDWI, NDBI, NBR and the clay, ferrous and iron-oxide mineral ratios as map layers, computes area statistics, and compares two dates to measure change.

Overview

Imagery is served by the Microsoft Planetary Computer, which hosts the full Sentinel-2 archive as cloud-optimised files. Choose a date range and cloud limit, pick a scene, and switch between indices and colour composites. Area statistics return the mean, spread and histogram of the index inside your rectangle.

Change mode places a baseline scene beside a recent one and reports the difference in each index, for desertification, wetland loss or urban growth studies.

What you enter

  • Area of interest
  • Date range and maximum cloud cover
  • Index or composite
  • Baseline and comparison scenes (change mode)

What you get

  • Index map layer over the basemap
  • Mean, standard deviation, percentiles and histogram
  • Change between two dates

Method and equations

Vegetation and water

NDVI = (B8 − B4)/(B8 + B4) · NDWI = (B3 − B8)/(B3 + B8) · MNDWI = (B3 − B11)/(B3 + B11)

Built-up and burn

NDBI = (B11 − B8)/(B11 + B8) · NBR = (B8 − B12)/(B8 + B12)

Alteration minerals

Band ratios adapted from Landsat mineral indices to Sentinel-2 bands.

Clay = B11/B12 · Ferrous = B11/B8 · Iron oxide = B4/B2
