Palynofacies Lab

Organic particle counts to depositional environment.

Plots AOM, phytoclast and palynomorph counts on Tyson’s (1995) ternary diagram and reads off the palynofacies field, depositional setting and kerogen character.

Overview

Counts are normalised to percentages and placed in one of the nine fields, from proximal shelf with abundant phytoclasts to distal suboxic–anoxic basin dominated by AOM. A reference guide explains each field.

Ternary normalisation

The three components are recalculated to 100% before plotting.

AOM% = 100 × AOM / (AOM + Phyto + Paly)
