Global Soil Properties

SoilGrids profiles and texture for any point.

Queries ISRIC SoilGrids for clay, silt, sand, bulk density, organic carbon, pH, CEC and coarse fragments at six depths, classifies texture on the USDA triangle and estimates water-retention properties with pedotransfer functions.

Overview

SoilGrids predicts soil properties worldwide at 250 m resolution from about 240,000 profiles and machine learning. For each depth the tool shows the mean prediction with its 5–95 % uncertainty range.

These are modelled values for planning and screening. They do not replace sampling and laboratory testing on site.

Method and equations

Pedotransfer functions

Water retention at −33 kPa and −1500 kPa and saturated conductivity are estimated from sand, clay and organic matter with Saxton & Rawls (2006).

θ33, θ1500, Ks = f(S, C, OM)

Texture classes

Sand, silt and clay fractions are placed in the twelve USDA texture classes.
